Assignmenteconomic theory - Assignment Example On the other hand the government will maintain monopolies whereby the cost of producing certain products are too expensive example the rail way industry. When negative externalities occur the government has a role to play in resolving the problem example pollution, the government also has a role to play in maintaining a competitive market in the economy and eliminate monopolies and oligopolies in order to achieve optimal pricing of goods and services in the economy. Income discrimination occurs when there are wage differences that are as a result of differences in ethnicity, gender, age and race, the government role is to eliminate wage discrimination through the implementation of policies, the existence of competitive markets also eliminate the problem of income distribution and therefore the government will encourage competition in order to eliminate income discrimination. An example of income discrimination in the US is that studies show that whites are paid higher wage rates than other races in the US. The role of the government in this case is to encourage competition and implementation of policies that discourage discrimination. This policy measure is appropriate given that income discrimination leads to the marginalization of certain groups.

The Top 3 management principle Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
The Top 3 management principle - Essay Example The top three management principles that can make superior healthcare managers are strategic and operational planning and decision-making, performance management, and change management because they make managers aware of and responsive to both internal and external management and leadership needs. The first important management principle is strategic and operational planning and decision-making because they merge the functions of managers as ââ¬Å"managersâ⬠and ââ¬Å"leaders.â⬠Management is differentiated from leadership because managers are concerned of planning and managing daily operations, while leaders are concerned of leading critical organizational and/or environmental changes. A superior healthcare manager must be both: a leader who can produce strategic plans that deal with changes in and outside the organization and a manager who can turn these plans to workable operation plans and who can monitor, evaluate, and direct their daily applications (Liebler and McConnell 92). An example is creating the strategic plan of automating the information system of the hospital that uses traditional paper formats, while an operational plan is having a comprehensive financial operational management plan that will deal with upcoming budget cuts. These plans, in additi on, are different in their scope, timeframe, and repetitiveness levels. Strategic plans are broad, made for long-term goals, and single-standing, while operational plans are specific, short-term objectives that are repeated, unless strategic changes are made. These plans, moreover, require making strategic and operational decisions (Liebler and McConnell 116-117). A strategic decision is choosing what road to take, while an operational decision is choosing how best to take the journey on that specific road. In the absence of middle and lower level managers who cannot make operational decisions or when upper management is called to help decide

Migration History Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Migration History Paper - Essay Example Firstly, it is the understanding from the interview that was conducted that ultimately the migrant experience within the United States has remained unchanged since late 18th century. Although technology has increased, jet travel has enabled individuals to rapid transit from international origins, and the complexity of paperwork and documentation within the United States has shifted, the first experience for the migrant is one in which hardship, deprivation, and most generally a step backwards in terms of quality of living is ultimately assumed. With regards to the interviewee in question, she described an experience in which once arriving in New York, she moved in to an apartment that was no larger than 500 ft.? and housed no less than six people; whereas in her home country, she had lived in the apartment that was nearly 700 ft.? and housed only three people. ... o the United States within the past 250 years, the reader should be mindful of the fact that the immigrant experience is ultimately different due to the rules and regulations of US visas and permits. Whereas 200 years ago the United States was willing to accept individuals as a means of providing labor to the rapidly industrializing system, the United States is currently reach the status of a highly developed nation and no longer requires the massive influx of unskilled immigrants to power the means of economic growth. However, this is not to say that migration and integration is no longer encouraged. As was the case with the interviewee in question, it was rapidly determined that rather than merely representing unskilled labor that had come to the United States as a means of bettering her life, this individual was highly skilled and represented key assets of education and experience can be utilized within the US economic system. The ultimate financial incentives that drove her to se ek out opportunities within the United States remain the fundamental defining characteristics of why I like the United States is continually attractive. With regards to the question of whether or not she would consider going back to her own country, the response came not as a function of seeking to define the fact that she now considered yourself an American where that she identified with, understood, and appreciated American culture; rather, the response was concentric upon the fact that she would not be able to make the same level of money and her own country as she was able to within the United States. This understanding necessarily brings the reader/researcher to the realization as to why it oftentimes takes to or three generations in order for the individuals to consider themselves an

Department of Maritime and Logistics Management Essay - 1
Department of Maritime and Logistics Management - Essay Example Businesses tend to opt for air cargo due to quick and safe on time delivery. The cargo handling and processing procedure is critical as goods need to be transported elegantly and safely (Wensveen, 2012,p.14). Airlines throughout the globe ensure to deliver best cargo services as revenue generation from cargo is more than passengersââ¬â¢ shipment. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate about the acquisitions and deployment of aircrafts into the fleets. The key factors involved in the aircrafts addition to the fleets have been elaborated. Furthermore, the air cargo handling procedure along with the difference from handling passengers and luggage is demonstrated. The intention remains to present the entire view about the airlines logistics management. Acquisitions and Deployment of Aircrafts: The addition of aircrafts into the fleet is a matter of serious concern for the organization. Several elements need to be examined before taking this step. Initially the need and requirement paradigm is explored. The strategic business units dig in that either it is adequate and necessary to pursue for this step or not. The organizational expeditions are certainly expanded by opting for the option of adding aircrafts into the fleet. The mergers and acquisitions in the airlines industry have not worked out pretty well in the past. The only successful merger was of Air France with KLM in 2004, making it Air France KLM. The newly merged company escorted for adding new aircrafts into the fleet but that decision was made after one year operations collectively (Gudmundsson, 2010, p.48). The management of aircrafts previously became an issue for the organization but they sorted it out by inaugurating information systems into the firm. All the operations were virtually connected and scheduling of flights and delivery of cargo was certainly more transparent and viable. After getting heads up in the respective area, Air France KLM went to the addition of aircrafts into the fleet (Romano, 2012, p.23). Some of the key factors that need to be considered airlineââ¬â¢s decision in adding aircrafts into the fleet are given below. Organizational Status: The airlines need to determine that either it is internally strong enough to deploy and acquire aircrafts into the fleet. The strategic business department of the airline needs to watch this matter deeply and scrutinize that either is the organization capable to handle the load. The requirement aspect wants to be covered too. The addition of aircrafts into the fleet without acknowledging, that either airlines market position is stable or not is vital. The organization propensity and tendency is crucial too. The addition of aircrafts requires expansion in staff and more finances for the organization. Some of the airlines go for acquisition and deployment step without working on these steps (Borken-Kleefeld, Berntsen and Fuglestvedt, 2010, p.5702). The precise understanding of the magnitude of coming events is imp ortant in the airlines industry. There are several external and internal factors that affect business endeavors of airlines industry, so it is eminent for the firms to concisely acknowledge the organizational status before stepping into something deep. The customers and business requirement is secondary issue but it is of much more significance. Airlines should have well equipped technological setup that would create synergy between the

Civilization or people Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Civilization or people - Term Paper Example This essay attempts to prove that Hannibalââ¬â¢s victory at the Battle of Cannae should be attributed to the Carthaginian generalââ¬â¢s tactical brilliance, and not to mere luck (i.e. the Roman army was seriously weakened by earlier battles). If Hannibal had exploited his triumph by attacking Rome, the Roman historian Livy believes, the Romans would have been obliged to bring peace claims. However, Hannibal decided not to attack Rome at the moment. Livy believes that this judgment was the ââ¬Ësalvation of the Roman state.ââ¬â¢1 The Battle of Cannae In 217 BC, Hannibal based his army near the Adriatic coast and kept on destroying villages in southern Italy.2 Polybius recounts that Hannibal was deeply informed of the problems posed by the Italian invasion and was aware that his main predicament would be resources.3 Rome was very weak at the time because of the massive losses it sustained the year prior. Still, Rome assigned Quintus Fabius Maximus as the new leader. Because Hannibal has a mightier cavalry, Fabius rested his army in the hills in order to reverse this advantage, resorting to the attack-retreat strategy. This was shrewd and successful given the changing balance of power after the defeats at Trasimeno and Trebia4: ââ¬Å"The Romans hovered in the vicinity of the Carthaginians, cut off stragglers and foragers, and prevented them from founding a permanent base. The strategy avoided Roman defeat and dimmed Hannibalââ¬â¢s glory. It successfully kept Romeââ¬â¢s allies from declaring for Carthage, but it aroused great opposition among Romans themselves, for their state had thrived on a tradition of offensive warfare.â⬠5 However, this was only a brief success. Fabius tried fearlessly to attack the Carthaginians in Falernia. He made sure that Hannibal was caught off guard. That moment, seeing his position as hopeless, Hannibal brought together all the animals in his encampment. He attached flares to each of them and made them attack the Roman encampment. Fear and bewilderment followed. Masked in darkness, with terror raging in the Roman encampment, Hannibal withdrew his whole army of 70,000 soldiers without any fatality on his side.6 Fabius had successfully held back Hannibal for six months, but the Senate decided to end his tenure as commanding officer and assigned two ambassadors, Varro and Paulus. They had realized that to confront Hannibal with not enough advantage would lead to a definite tragedy. Hence, they amassed a huge army: ââ¬Å"Rome assembled the largest army they had ever placed in the field, eighty thousand infantry, and seven thousand cavalry.â⬠7 Hannibal passed through the Aufidus River. The river was actually a barricade in case of defeat. Hannibal planned to take advantage of this positioning to tempt the Roman army to attack. Another lure, even though unintended, was that all of the elephants of Hannibal had been wiped out. It would be a war between two remarkably trained armed forces, th e Carthaginians being outnumbered by the Roman army.8 Both the Roman and Carthaginian armies were organized in traditional order, the cavalry on both flanks and the infantry in the middle. However, Hannibal placed his less reliable Spanish and Gauls foot soldiers at the forefront, while keeping his powerful African infantry on both flanks. This worked as bait for the attacking Roman army, who attacked the Spaniards and Gauls, pushing them, just like what Hannibal had planned. As a result, the U-shaped Carthaginian formation became bowl-shaped,

Depatment of Veterans Affairs Essay Example for Free
Depatment of Veterans Affairs Essay The Department of Veterans Affairs is continuing to have many problems with many of the services that they offer. The service that has been impacted the most is the healthcare division, others such as vocational rehabilitation and the Post 9/11 GI Bill are not providing the proper outlets and support that the veterans are in need of. In recent months the VA has had many accountability problems with regard to patients even dying from lack of services. When these problems first came to light the Federal government investigated some of the problems and there was no accountability for the people that were not doing their jobs. There were also bonuses being given out when people were not doing their jobs. There have been many policyââ¬â¢s put in place such as Department of Veterans Affairs Management Accountability Act of 2014. This should help many of the problems that the VA is having in the healthcare division alone. The largest problem that they are currently having is a large backlog of patients just awaiting to be seen, as well as being understaffed for the amount of staff needed for the large amount of veterans now being seen. Recently the secretary of the VA, Eric Shinseki, resigned from his position and the Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Sloan Gibson took his position for a short period until a new secretary could be chosen. The new Secretary of Veterans Affairs is Robert McDonald. He has proposed many different ways to help get veterans the benefits that they have been waiting for. The backlog is still over 750,000 veterans with almost one third of them still being from the backlog. Some of the more recent problems have been that the Department of Veterans Affairs has caught employees discarding, through burning and shredding, the files of some of the veterans that have applied for benefits. There are other plans being put into place, one by the President, and this is the Veterans Choice Card. This new program will allow veterans to visit other hospitals and doctors outside of the VA for treatment. The Veterans Affairs hospitals can only grow so much until they need help from outside sources to h elp take care of everyone that needs medical attention. There has been an Industry Day as the Veterans Affairs office has been calling it which is going to be for determining the costs for healthcare outside of the VA. The topics that will be covered in this are:à Department of Veterans Affairs Management Accountability Act of 2014 Backlog
Helicopter Experiment: Speed of Fall
Helicopter Experiment: Speed of Fall Hend Darwish Research Question: At what speed will the helicopter fall by adding more paper clips to its base (the bottom)? Variables: Independent Variable: Amount of paper clips Dependent Variable: Speed Constant: Same Helicopter Same Timer Same height (2m) Hypothesis: My hypothesis is that the more paper clips added to the base of the helicopter, the speed will increase. I think this will happen because gravity will pull the helicopter down and the opposite force (air resistance), which is acting on the wings will get weaker because the wings will fold upwards. This will cause less for the air resistance to act on which will cause the speed to increase. Method: For our helicopter lab, we first measured two meters on the wall so we have will drop the helicopter at the same place. Then, Eliah will drop the helicopter and Holly will time how long it takes with the stopwatch. We repeated this step for three mores tests and with two, three, four, five and six paperclips attached to the base. Then, we found the average speed of each paperclip and recorded our results into a graph. To make our test a fair test, we made sure its the same person timing and dropping the helicopter. Also, we always dropped the helicopter from two meters. For our safety, we made sure that we are in an empty space so we dont bump into anyone or the paper helicopter doesnt go on someones head. Also, we made sure that we are not next to any chemicals or flamed Bunsen burner so when we pick up our helicopter, it wont catch on fire or be covered by any chemicals that could harm us. Apparatus: 1 Paper Helicopter Stopwatch 100cm ruler 6 paperclips Diagram: Data Collection: Amount of Paper Clips on a Helicopter The amount of paper-clips on the helicopter Time taken for the helicopter to fall a distance of two meters (s) Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Mean Speed (m/s) 1 1.38 1.68 1.31 1.45 1.38 2 1.22 1.40 1.19 1.27 1.57 3 1.13 1.40 1.30 1.27 1.57 4 1.16 1.0 1.09 1.05 1.9 5 .96 1.30 .84 1.03 1.94 6 .63 .53 .81 .65 3.08 Data Processing: Table of Amount of Paper Clips Affect the Average Speed of the Paper Helicopter The amount of paper-clips on the helicopter Time taken for the helicopter to fall a distance of two meters (s) Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Mean Average Speed (m/s) 1 1.38 1.68 1.31 1.45 1.38 2 1.22 1.40 1.19 1.27 1.57 3 1.13 1.40 1.30 1.27 1.57 4 1.16 1.0 1.09 1.05 1.9 5 .96 1.30 .84 1.03 1.94 6 .63 .53 .81 .65 3.08 To get the mean, you have to add the three trials together then divide it by three. For example: 1.83 + 1.68 + 1.31 =4.37 4.37 / 3 = 1.45 To get the speed, you have to divide 2 by the mean of the three trials. For example: 2 / 1.45 = 1.38 2 / 1.27 = 1.57 Data Presentation: Conclusion: According to our graph our hypothesis was correct: The more paper clips added to the base of our helicopter the more the speed will increase. Our data corresponds with the line of best fit really well up until our last data point which was 6 paper clips and was 3.08s. It is much higher than all the other points, I think this one particular piece of data is unreliable because it dose not correspond to the rest of the data as well as the graph. This may be because our timing methods when timing the last one was different then the rest of our graph. To make sure that this would be an accurate experiment, we did three trials for each paper clip(s) and then calculated the mean and speed. Evaluation: Ã Ã Ã Our Method was reliable and extremely accurate because for each amount of paper clip, we had three trials so we could create an average speed. Also, we used the same person for timer and the dropper of the paper helicopter. If I could re-do the experiment, I would have made the height higher, such as 3-4m so we could have more accurate readings.
